Meet the Designer Vanessa

Artistry and creative lineage run deep in my blood. Raised by generations of acclaimed and beloved painters, I had a childhood saturated with dynamic forms, vibrant color palettes, and deep, frequent family conversations about artistic intent. In many ways, fine art became my native first language long before I ever picked up a jeweler’s torch.
In 1999, I founded my creative studio in the coastal community of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, launching Art by Any Means Jewelry. Originally, our company name was born as a playful pun on Art by Any Medium. Armed with a comprehensive degree in Fine Art and extensive formal training across multiple traditional genres, I felt a deep conviction that fine jewelry is, by all definitions, a profound art form—by any means.
I was initially drawn to handmade jewelry design because it harmoniously bridges multiple disciplines. It gracefully marries the physical structure of sculpture with the highly expressive color relationships of painting. It captures both the satisfying form and daily function of ceramics while utilizing the meticulous, rhythmic production methods of small-batch printing. By hand-selecting unique gemstones and carefully layering them with hand-formed metals, each piece emerges as a three-dimensional, wearable canvas.
Perhaps what I love most about creating handcrafted jewelry is the evocative way it evolves once it leaves my Cape Ann studio. The moment you wear a piece, it becomes an extension of your identity and a canvas for your artistic expression.
Why settle for wearing a basic mass-produced accessory when you can actively express your ultimate creativity and celebrate your authentic self by wearing fine art?

Vanessa Savlen

Art is in my blood through a long lineage of acclaimed and beloved familial painters. Surrounded by artists and their artwork, my childhood was saturated with color and form, and infused with intention by the frequent conversations about its meaning. So, in a way, art is also my first language. In 1999, I opened my studio in the seaside community of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, and established “Art by any Means Jewelry” as my creative vision. Initially, our name was a pun on Art by any Medium, as I have a degree in Fine Art and formal training in many genres, and additionally, my feeling that jewelry is an art form, by any means. I was drawn to designing jewelry because it includes the structure of sculpture and the expressive colors of painting, the satisfying form and function of ceramics, and the ultimate production of small batch printing. Perhaps what I love most about jewelry is the evocative way it becomes your artistic expression when you wear it.

Why wear an accessory when you can express your creativity with art?
